Personality:

(cw: child neglect, animal cruelty, and murder mentions)

Dandy is, essentially, an emotionally stunted young man. Raised by a single, wealthy mother who always aims to please him, he is in every sense a spoiled child that never grew up. Dandy feels entitled to everything he wants, including people, whom he views as possessions rather than individuals. He believes that money can solve everything, including buying the silence of local police, who then turn a blind eye to his misdeeds β€” truly solidifying his view that laws are for poor people.

His egocentrism only became worse when a local serial killer's influence on Dandy turned his sadistic tendencies towards people, rather than neighborhood pets. Dandy genuinely believes that he is a god and therefore immortal, sent to Earth to deliver death, and that's why he doesn't feel anything when he kills. He believes that he is perfect, and that reflects in the way he constantly admires himself, and brags about his own greatness. But because of this over-inflated ego, Dandy is prone to acting out in violent tantrums when people don't obediently do as he wants them to. In some cases, his tantrums have resulted in self-harm, but in most, he goes so far as killing those he feels have slighted him. Dandy is also not above using these tantrum fits to get what he wants, despite his overbearing sense of pride.

But as apathetic as he can be at times, and the fact that he recognizes that he cannot love, Dandy is surprisingly sensitive in some ways. He feels a kinship with the clown-killer that inspires him, and even with the freaks of the show before they turned against him. His ego is massive but fragile, as his mother once told his psychiatrist. Even the smallest of insults can send Dandy into a hysterical fit of tears if it strikes the right nerve. His tendency for melodramatic extremes is influenced in part by his spoiled upbringing, but also his background in theatre (though his mother denied him the chance to be an actor).

Between his incredibly sheltered upbringing and the absentee parenting his mother perpetuated, Dandy's emotional maturity is no better than a child's. He loves fun, but he's especially fond of toys meant for children, dressing up, playing pretend and even putting on puppet shows in his playroom. Unfortunately, Dandy also gets bored incredibly easily, and when Dandy is bored, he's prone to fits of irritation and in the extreme, his volatile outbursts. Not only that, but Dandy is completely incapable of accepting responsibility for his actions. He blames others for the bad things that happen around him, and even denies crimes that he himself committed. Any time Dandy is punished for his misdeeds, he'll cry that "it isn't fair," and that "he did nothing wrong". Even as he is being executed, Dandy pleads with his killers to spare him, claiming that he only did what he had to as a harbinger of death, and that he shouldn't be punished for doing God's work.

Despite his instability though, Dandy is more cunning than one would expect. While his emotional outbursts can undermine him quite frequently, he is very charismatic and quite the manipulator. He knows how to plan his actions in advance, and perform them seamlessly to trick others. He strings along the daughter of the maid he killed for days, before having her killed by the very police officer she brought to arrest him; he lures out prostitutes with his charming persona, only to kill them ruthlessly. Because of his childish personality, Dandy knows people will often dismiss his lethality, and uses that to his advantage. When he finally knocks them down, it's with the cold satisfaction of winning a game, rather than taking a life.

As such, Dandy doesn't really care about the emotions of others. Life is a performance for him, and he is an actor before anything else. He knows how to present the perfect persona for his audience; whether it's the petulant child for his mother and house servants, the ruthless killer for his enemies, or the charming gentleman for potential interests and possible victims. Dandy was raised with class, and as such, he knows how to behave and can be refined, polite, even generous in his kindness so long as he's getting his way.

But even if he's apathetic to the feelings of others, Dandy still yearns to be understood, loved, and accepted by those around him. Unable to find a group to belong to and feeling smothered by his sheltering mother, Dandy turns to murder in order to express himself. There is momentary reprieve for him, when he purchases the freak show from Elsa; but when Dandy is ultimately rejected by the cast, and officially made to feel like he belongs no where, he kills everyone before dying himself.
